The official language of the conference is English and will be used for all presentations and printed materials. Local Time Zones In January, Estoril, PORTUGAL will be observing Western European Time (WET), which is the same as Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) and Greenwich Mean Time (GMT). Traveler's Checks and Credit Cards Credit cards, including MasterCard® and Visa® and traveler's checks are accepted at most hotels, restaurants, department stores, and souvenir shops. Tipping Standards In Portugal, a service charge or serviço is NOT usually added to hotel and restaurant bills in Portugal. However, it is customary to tip an additional 10% if the service warrants. In hotels, tip €1-2 for bellhops who carry your luggage to the room and tip maids €1 per day who provide extra service, such as bringing breakfast. For taxi drivers, leave any amount of tip you wish - some add 10% of the fare as the tip while others round up to the nearest €5. Electricity Electric current in Portugal is 220 volts, 50 Hz. An adaptor must be used with appliances from the United States or elsewhere that operates on a different voltage. Business Hours Banks: Monday - Friday from 8:30 - 15:00. Shops: Monday - Friday from 9:00 - 13:00 and 15:00 - 19:00. Many shops close on Saturdays at 13:00. Major supermarkets and shopping centers are open every day from 10:00 - 23:00. Pharmacies: Monday - Friday from 9:00 - 13:00 and 15:00 - 19:00 and Saturdays from 9:00 - 13:00. Public Services and Utilities: Monday - Friday from 9:30 - 12:00 and 14:00 - 17:30. Weights and measures The system of measurement used in Portugal, as in the majority of European countries, is the metric system, and temperatures are expressed in degrees Centigrade. Also, a comma and not a point, as in English-speaking countries, indicate decimals in Portugal. Conference Attire The conference does not request a specific dress code, but in case of doubt, business casual will be absolutely fine. Cellular Phones, Pagers and Watch Alarms As a courtesy to our speakers and other attendees, please turn off any cellular phones, pagers and watch alarms during sessions.
